Press Release
Blood Orange-Young Painters from Britannia
Bright Treasure Art Projects is delighted to present a group show of young British painters, ¡®Blood Orange¡¯ at the 4th Art Daegu International Art Fair opening at EXCO in the city of Daegu on the 2nd of June, 2010.
The title ¡®Blood Orange¡¯ comes from a popular citrus fruit produced in Southern Europe and known to be harvested only for very short period of time to enjoy. It looks similar to a normal orange but is slightly smaller. It is named for the blood red colour of the fruit inside instead of the usual orange colour. This very special and mysterious fruit is reminiscent of passionate young painters who cultivate their creativity until they are ripe enough to peel open and reveal their exceptional hidden talent to the world.
Practice of young British painters in the 21st century is beyond that of famous or infamous yBa (young British artists) trend of 90s. It was rebellious satire, violent sexuality and stylised trendy installations that were so dominant in the art scene of the 90s and early 2000s in the UK.
Having overcome the mannerism of their predecessors, the new breed of artists have focused on contemporary painting. They are equipped with strong concepts and innovations that have started to emerge in the London art scene over the last few years.
Despite its traditional perception, painting as a medium is quite challenging to these contemporary painters based in Europe whose position has been overshadowed by ¡®Avant-guard¡¯ contemporary art. It requires great insight for these young painters to create works with the proper ¡®code¡¯ of ¡®contemporary art¡¯ along with a respectful sense of beauty and communication with their audience.
This special exhibition in the fair, ¡®Blood Orange¡¯ is divided into two segments. The main gallery will project works by 7 selected artists-Jill Mason, Stewart Cliff, Chris Daniels, Peter Lynch, Vaishali Pathak, Hayoung Kim and Frederic Shimmelschmit. Also, works by Gorka Mohamed and Juliette Losq will be comprehensively presented at the stand of Bright Treasure Art Projects.
All of the nine artists participating in this group exhibition are around thirty years old with diverse regional and cultural backgrounds. Their practices are getting recognition from curators and collectors in Europe and America as their profile continues to grow.
Looking at the works of each artist closely, one can see that these artists study ¡®painting¡¯ within the tradition from the contemporary view point, as much as artists from Renaissance and Modern periods did. Also, it can be easily seen that London as a litmus and an incubator of creativity and artistic liberalism is the origin for these ideas and bold expression on the canvases of the nine artists presented here.
Daegu is emerging as a cultural establishment with its long history and regional support for the creative industry. It will be a unique opportunity to experience London as a cultural and artistic Mecca in Daegu through ¡®Blood Orange¡¯, a special funded group exhibition by Art Daegu International Art Fair. |
